Just like a summer sunset, summertime is fading. I always have so many summer goals at the start of summer. This summer has been a great one here at the Harris House. We vacationed, spent time with extended family, and even did some DIY projects to our house. I haven’t blogged as consistently this summer because I’ve felt the need to just breath and be. I think that’s one of things I love most about summer is that for the most part, schedules can go by the wayside. But in case you’ve been wondering what we have been up to, I’m going to give you a basic recap of our Harris House Happenings this summer.
Jason and I are DIYers. We love a good project. Fortunately for me (and our bank account), my husband is handy. He’s one of those annoying people that can watch a YouTube video on how to do something and then replicate it. I don’t always love the process of DIY projects, like how they ALWAYS take longer than you think, but I do love the results. True to form, we aren’t all the way done with our DIY projects but done enough to where I can show you some serious progress.
Project #1 Painting the House
When we purchased our house, one of the first things I knew that was going to change was the exterior paint color. Nothing screams 90s like a Dusty Rose Paint base with brown accents.
Here she is in all her Dusty Rose glory:
This is what it looks like now:
My favorite part? The navy blue doors. When we were painting them, the first coat looked like crayola blue, and I was FREAKING. OUT. But coat number two went on darker, and the finished product is just what I pictured. Bonus points if you can find a cute furry creature in one of these shots.
Project #2 Landscaping the Jungle er…Backyard
This one is still a work in progress but there has been enough progress that I want to show you.
First thing we did was roto-till the ground. Then Jason and I installed a sprinkler system (thank you YouTube). After that Jason laid our sod.
We installed concrete edging. This was a project. I don’t think I’ve ever sweat so much in my life. It probably didn’t help that we did this in late June in 90 degree weather. His parents took the kids for the day, and Jason and I mixed our own concrete, by hand. Um, note to self next time rent the freaking mixer. But we got it done, and I think for our first try at it, the concrete edging came out pretty great.
One of my favorite additions to the backyard it the garden boxes. Jason made these for me via my Pinterest inspiration. I’m excited to have a garden next year. I’m going through withdrawal not having a boat-load of zucchini to transform into zucchini bread this year.
Project #3 Update Interior (which really means IKEA trip with my Sister)
My sister lives in Oklahoma (boo) but she comes home for a few weeks in the summer. We have made it our annual tradition to go to IKEA, and it is required to listen to Hamilton on the way there and back. If you don’t know what Hamilton is, don’t get me started because I will freak you out with how much I love it. Just go on Youtube listen to cast album (you have to do it in one sitting by the way). Also, I swear YouTube is not paying me for this post.
Here are my favorite buys this year:
Bowls and Mugs:
I don’t know why but clean white dishes just make my heart throb. These are gorgeous and wonderfully functional.
I’ve been designing our Master bedroom for the last year. These drapes really softened the look and make me smile every time I walk in my room. I LOVE them. They were only $20!!!
Family Picture Frame:
It took me forever to figure out what I wanted to go above our fireplace. I finally decided on this frame and family picture. I think it’s hung too high (insert marital disagreement here). Is it too high?
Well that about does it for this summer. We also had a few vacations thrown into the mix which made it hard to make as much progress on all our projects that we would have liked. But, life is a balance right?
What summer projects did you do?
